"Coastal Birds" is arriving back from the printers any day now, and the launch is in a couple of weeks at the Nottage Maritime Institute, Wivenhoe, Essex 21st June 12-2pm.
It perched on wires, bracing itself against the brisk wind, looking around and occassionally dropping down to seize an angry bumble bee which was soon dispatched and swallowed.
Also from the hide, a male Hen Harrier, Red Kites and Buzzards a a fly by Hooded Crow, while in the birches a mobile flock of c100 Redpoll.
The beetles were more sedentary and clustered together under the logs, they look very prehistoric.
A great job to get, and one that allowed me to visit this lovely corner of England.
This was a particularly pleasing job as this was an area I birded as a teenager, never thinking there would be nesting Dartford Warbler and Woodlark, you had to go to the New Forest for those.
Whilst there I was intrigued by the complex of aerials and old building,(exBBC transmitter), in this wild open landscape, meanwhile a flock of Brent Geese, newly in from their arctic breeding grounds, fed unconcerned amongst the saltmarsh.
A very high tide kept up by blustery winds meant the waders were very keen to start feeding as water receded. Teal, Knot and Dunlin, also Redshank and a good number of Bar-tailed Godwits.
This has really inspired me to do some more and I'm now working on a series of coastal bird prints, watch this space, in the mean time here are the latest.
I'm always attracted to these boldly patterned drakes, their marking have an abstract quality about them. The Eiders were part of a flock of mostly males that loafed around the harbour at Seahouses, mildly displaying to each other, and emitting that evocative "wooooo" sound.
The Smew I sketched a couple of winters ago at Abberton at dusk with the birds turning blue as the orange-pink sun set behind the trees.
The next in the series will be drake Goldeneye, another wonderfully marked duck, the originals, prints and eventually lino-cuts will be available soon through my website, www.richardallenillustrator.com
A few remain, constantly on the move trying to find firm footing as the water rises. Out on the estuary the first Black-headed Gulls are arriving for their overnight roost. I've painted this view many times and it is always changes, different tide, weather, light and birds.
The light was so clear and crisp, the terns and eiders really stood out against the deep blue-green sea. We also had a trip up to the teming bird colony at St.Abb's Head where I sketched Guillemots in the low evening sun. Back in deepest Essex now, but there are some compensations, such as the Nightingales in the wood just along the estuary.
Rather windy, but some glorious sunny days, and what dramatic scenery. Eiders everywhere as expected, but also Long-tailed Ducks, Purple Sandpipers, and as the week progressed more Arctic and Sandwich terns. I was particularlky drawn to the dynamtic shapes and patterns of the drake Eiders, especially in the sharp, bright light. Here are a selection of my sketches, more to follow.
We did a beautiful walk up the Doone valley from Malmsmead, not many birds apart from tits, nuthatches and treecreepers, but the Dippers put on a good show. We had good views of one perched over the water singing it's rich, thrush-like song as it curtsied and twisted it's head to and fro. Another appeared under the bank, obviously the object of the performance, and then the pair flew off up stream calling excitedly.
Next week and the snow has arrived in Essex, bringing good numbers of Fieldfares and pushing some duck onto the unfrozen Colne estuary. These displaying male Goldeneye were a fine sight on a cold grey morning. The females however were less than impressed, continuing to dive for food, oblivious to all the attention.

A very good location and Martin's local knowledge was invaluable. Highlights included the vultures at Monfrague,( we saw 13 species of raptors including Spanish Imperial Eagle, Black-winged Kite and several stunning male Hen Harriers), flocks of Great and Little Bustards on the steppe near Campo Lugar, huge flocks of Cranes, and just the general abundance of larks, finches and sparrows. I would certainly reccommend it as a winter birding destination, we even had some lovely warm sunshine, it was quite s shock to come back to wet and windy Britain.
It was incredibly tame as it flitted around the visitor car park in the late afternoon sunshine. The pale pinky-buff rump and all dark tail could be clearly see, and it had a large in inquisitive eye.
A breezy, but sunny afternoon last week at Abberton reservoir. Peregrine, Colne Point, 25/09/12
There is often an adult Peregrine sat in this particular field and I wasn't disappointed today. It was fluffed up and preening, enjoying the autumn sun, but keeping an eye on the passing Wood Pigeons. I settled down to sketch, but after a few minute I looked up and it had gone.
A good day of visible migration with swallows streaming through and small groups os Siskins passing over. This Hobby gave good views as it perched on a post inbetween catching some of the numerous Common Darters and Migrant Hawkers that swarmed along the sheltered, sunny side of the hedge.
Greenshank, Alresford Creek, 5/10/12
Low tide is the best time to see Greenshank in the creek, they race along in the shallows with bills open snapping up any small prey. The adults are already in their pale winter plumage, whereas the young birds are still in the neat, spot edged , darker juvenile plumage.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04224522923018331269noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4291403783792107160.post-70491917469135301562012-09-26T03:37:00.002-07:002012-09-26T03:37:57.142-07:00

What some weather! I've done a couple of constrasting sketches of Avocets, the first is a poor bird just sitting out the down pour. The second was Monday evening, the rain and gales had subsided, and the sun actually came out. The tide was rising rapidly causing frenzied activity amongst the waders. Even in silhouette the different species are distinctive, a moment later the mud was covered and he birds gone.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04224522923018331269noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4291403783792107160.post-17743177111619705462012-09-20T12:05:00.001-07:002012-09-20T12:05:28.728-07:00A few sketches from my holiday in Calabria, southern Italy at the end of August. Birding was a little quiet, but I was delighted to be able to watch bee-eaters from the balcony most mornings. They really are fantastic birds, and that call is so characteristic of the Mediterranean. The numbers built up gradually to 30, and then one morning they were all gone.
One interesting aspect of birding abroad is seeing familiar birds in unfamiliar settings. I watched a group of Long-tailed Tits in a baking hot pine forest behind a beach, they looked sleek and dark, with grey backs and black wings. Very different from the fluffy pink, white and black birds I'm use to seeing in my garden.
Migrants were few and far between with the weather being so good, but one morning a male Honey Buzzard flapped up from the cliff and sat in a fig tree allowing great views, until the thermals got going, and it disappeared.
A few sketches from my holiday this summer. Glorious weather in Shropshire, and I painted this view of Cader Idris from Roundton Hill, and the ford from a shady spot near the river. We moved on up to Dumfries and Galloway, and still had good weather when visiting St.Ninians cave, (can you spot Sally and Buster on the rocks?)
